Leaving her to use her phone, Josh crept back inside to check on Chuck and was relieved to find his brother deep in sleep.
Back in the kitchen, he slowed at the window where he could see Mallory on the porch step, still typing out a text. Longing pulled at him.
Jesus, how crazy was this?
Two hours earlier, he’d been in the store, pissed off and turned on and generally screwed up—and now, Mallory was here, about to spend the night.
In his bed.
Only without him in it.
He stared hard at his reflection in the darkened glass.
Seriously?
But why not?
They weren’t together anymore. If he came on to her—if she reciprocated—the sex would just be a one night stand. A goddamned great one night stand, but a one night stand, all the same. And he didn’t want that.
No, scratch that—he did want that. He wanted her, but not like a fling.
He turned from the window, tired of staring at his own blank expression.
Christ—who was he kidding? He didn’t know what the hell he wanted now.
The screen creaked open and Mallory appeared, holding up her phone. “I sent her a text.” She rolled her eyes. “God, listen to me. It’s like I’m twelve, announcing I called my parents and they said I could stay for dinner.”
He chuckled, grateful to her for lightening the mood.
“You sure you don’t mind giving up your bed?” she asked.
“Nah. I’ll pretend I’m back in college, passed out after a frat party.”
“Except you hated frat parties,” she reminded him.
“I did, didn’t I?”
“You know,” she began carefully. “It’s a big bed, and...Well, I mean, there were lots of nights when we went to bed together and didn’t have sex, right? Because we were too tired or we didn’t want to.”
He tried to bite back a grin and failed.
She frowned at him. “What?”
“For the record, guys never don’t want sex. We could have climbed Everest, raised a barn, performed brain surgery, and we will still find the energy for sex.”
She smiled. “So how many barns did you raise today?”
“Only two.” He shrugged. “It was a slow day.”
They just stared at each other.
Josh scanned her eyes, hunting for clues.
What was she thinking?
He used to be able to read her in an instant—there was nothing in her heart she could hide from him. Now he second-guessed everything she said, every expression, every silence.
Jesus, maybe she was right—maybe they were twelve. Because all of a sudden he felt as awkward and goofy as a damn teenager—maybe even the same teenager who saw her for the first time on the pier after winning the state championship, trying desperately to chase down her runaway homework which he’d managed to snatch before it took flight into the water. Both of them winded and flushed, she’d asked how she could repay him—he’d said that was easy: let him buy her a slice of pizza.
Regret fisted around his heart.
Man, it had been so simple then. Their biggest worry was whether or not they’d pass their Chem tests, and all it had taken to melt her heart was rescue a sheet of paper from the wind.
